Bilateral Arm-Abduction Shoulder Radiography to Determine the Involvement of the Scapulothoracic Motion in Frozen Shoulder
Authors
Abstract:
Background: We hypothesize that there is no difference in the motion of the scapula with respect to the thoracic wall (scapulothoracic interface) between the affected versus non-affected shoulder on 0° and 90° standard arm abduction radiography. Methods: We enrolled 30 patients with the diagnosis of unilateral frozen shoulder after ruling out of other pathologies. Bilateral standard shoulder radiography was done in two position of 0° and 90° of arm abduction. Non-affected side was used as a control group. Results: The mean scapulothoracic angle of the affected side was significantly larger than the non-affected side in both 0° and 90°of abduction in spite that the scapulohumeral angles were comparable in 0°, indicating potential alteration in scapular positioning. Conclusion: Scapulothoracic motion and position can be affected in frozen shoulder along with other areas. All treatment modalities should be applied to this area as well if substantial difference was detected between the two sides. Level of evidence: I

A Comparison of Electrical Activity of Arm Abductor Muscles in the Shoulder Abduction and Scaption Between Shooting Fields
Abstract Objective: Considering the positions that the shooter take during shooting in different fiels, possibility of activity the deltoid and supraspinatus muscles which are common muscles during shooting, varies in different fields. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluation and compare the activity of deltoid and supraspinatus muscles between shooting fields. Methods: 2...

Duplay (1896) was the first investigator to recognize pathologic disorders of extra-articular tissues as possible factors responsible for stiff and painful shoulders. It was his belief that an inflammatory process of the subacromial bursa was the causative agent producing this syndrome. He designated the entity ‘‘scapulohumeral periarthritis.’’ Soon this term came to include a host of heterogen...
full textComparing the Isometric Strength of the Shoulder and Scapulothoracic Muscles in Volleyball and Futsal Athletes
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the symmetry of the isometric strength of the shoulder and scapulothoracic muscles in volleyball and futsal athletes. Methods: In this case-control study, the strength of the scapulothoracic muscles and rotation of the shoulders in 20 adult volleyball athletes and 20 futsal adult athletes, who were randomly selected from sports clubs around Tehran, were me...
full textThe effect of shoulder abduction angles, shoulder dominance and non-dominance and external loading on shoulder muscles co-contraction ratio in overhead athletes and non-athletes
The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of shoulder abduction angles, dominant and non-dominant arm and external loading on co-contraction ratio during arm abduction in scapular plane in overhead athletes and non-athletes. 10 swimmers, 10 handball players and 10 tennis players and ten non-athletes voluntarily participated in this study. Electromyography activity of shoulder muscles ...

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT Frozen shoulder is a painful condition that follows a protracted clinical course. We aim to review the management of patients with a diagnosis of frozen shoulder who are referred for specialist orthopaedic evaluation against existing guidelines in primary care. ASSESSMENT OF PROBLEM Referrals and clinical records were reviewed for all patients referred for orthopaedic spe...
full textThe pathology of frozen shoulder.
We treated 22 patients with a diagnosis of primary frozen shoulder resistant to conservative treatment by manipulation under anaesthetic and arthroscopic release of the rotator interval, at a mean time from onset of 15 months (3 to 36). Biopsies were taken from this site and histological and immunocytochemical analysis was performed to identify the types of cell present. The tissue was characte...
